sonophobia

"As I said in my comments on bumpin', there are a couple songs that I consider my favorite. These songs never seem to get old no matter how many times I listen to them. Taking a good hard look at it now, I think I'd have to say that sonophobia is the favorite of all the tracks I've written over the years.

Really, the song has quite a simple structure compared to tracks like the Hampton Megamix and Break the Dance. The whole song is centered around a monophonic bassline that just pumps out one note from that growling bassline. The percussion isn't too complicated with a shaker, a closed hat and an open hat with a clap on the back beat. Throw in a few simple sound fx and all that's left is just a single lead synth. But what a synth it is!

I'm a sucker for a nice TB-303 rhythm and I've never been able to beat the acid line in this track. Even by itself it really captures a nice rave feeling, but put it with the rest of the instruments of the track and it's nrg heaven. I especially like how the shaker rhythm so sickly massages that TB-303 when it kicks in at 01:07, and then how the track really takes off with the cross delay effect at 01:31. Even the variations that build up the track from 00:00 to the first main section that starts at 00:54 has such a sweet bad attitude that it gets me in that funk everytime. I had to save the best for last, though and get frekin' crazy with the cut-off frequency from 02:21 to 04:04.

The other elements of the track were created to enhance the nrg of the acid line. This includes the build up synth sirens and that metallic percussion sound that kicks in at 01:44 for the first time. One special mention is the pulsating bass synth that kicks into the track at 00:14. This is from a synthesizer that I actually built myself with an old program called SynC Modular. The synth is called The Wake Synthesizer and I hope to develope it a bit further and use it on many tracks in the future.

The best part about this songs story is that it is making a come back! My game developement partner in crime and I have decided to use it for the theme song to one of our upcoming games for 2008! The track in its original form just sets the tone perfectly for the battle that will ensue in this futuristic world, but I don't want to give all the details away! Check the Toobix website and sign up at the forum for updates. Then you can be the judge to see if this songs really does have enough bad attitude to make your fear sound."
